Why are eggs so good for babies?

Eggs are rich in protein, B12, choline, iodine, vitamin A and folate, which are all essential nutrients required for healthy growth and development in babies.

They also contain some iron which is a particularly important nutrient for babies as their iron stores become depleted at around 6 months. For this reason, plenty of iron-rich foods are needed to meet their requirements.

When can babies have egg?

Babies can have well-cooked eggs (white and yolk) as soon as they are ready to start solids, which is generally at around 6 months.

Just be aware of the safety precautions when it comes to feeding eggs to babies (see the below sections on safe cooking and allergies).

Safe cooking of eggs for baby

Raw and undercooked eggs can carry the bacteria salmonella, which causes foodborne illness affecting the digestive tract.

Babies are more susceptible to salmonella infection as their immune systems are not yet fully developed.

For this reason, eggs should be well-cooked as salmonella is sensitive to temperature. Cooking eggs and other high-risk foods such as meat and poultry to a temperature of 70°C will ensure any salmonella present is killed off.

When making scrambled egg for your baby, make sure it’s cooked until firm, so that there are no runny parts left.

Eggs and allergies

Eggs are one of the 9 common allergy-causing foods, so they should ideally be introduced to your baby between the ages of 6 and 12 months.

This recipe also includes the option of adding milk, which is another common food allergen. For this reason, milk and eggs should be introduced separately first so that any reactions are easier to identify.
