Fish, a nutrition powerhouse
Fish is full of essential nutrients for babies such as omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals. These nutrients all play a crucial role in the healthy development of baby’s brain, eyes and overall growth.
What makes fish pie such a great food for babies?
Fish pie combines the goodness of fish with other nutritious ingredients such as milk, potato and peas, making it a filling, balanced meal full of a range of important nutrients.
It also offers a gentle transition from purees to chunky textures.
Here are some of the benefits of fish pie for babies:
Omega-3 fatty acids - fish pie is packed with omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA which support brain and eye development
Protein - fish is an excellent source of protein, which is essential for babies’ muscle and tissue development
Vitamins and Minerals - fish pie provides essential vitamins such as B12 and minerals such as iodine which are both crucial for healthy development in babies
Texture transition - fish pie is soft and mushy, allowing a gradual transition from purees to more textured, chunky foods. This helps babies to develop their chewing and swallowing skills.
Fish and allergies
Fish is one of the 9 common allergy-causing foods, so it should be introduced to your baby between the ages of 6 and 12 months.
This fish pie recipe also includes two other common allergy-causing foods, milk and wheat.
These three allergens should all be introduced separately first so that any reactions are easier to identify.
